Driving Question:
What are the risks and benefits to self and others
in the digital environment,
and what are schools
doing about it?
Reflection 1
Description
The digital landscape is wild and hard to always pin down however, it plays a major role in how students communicate, learn and even socialise. Social media platforms, online learning tools and even video games allow students to connect and share information and develop themselves. Although the seeming benefit this all brings there are challenges present in the digital environment. From cyberbullying, privacy, and misinformation, just what can schools do to help students navigate the digital world.
Feelings
Personally, I only see the positives that come from the digital world. It provides many opportunities for students and society in general. It allows people to connect, learn and improve people’s day to day lives. However, I do understand that it requires immense responsibility and it can be hard to have and/or gain an awareness online. As someone who regularly uses digital tools I recognise both the benefits and the risks. It is easy to see how online environments can be supportive, but also how quickly negative experiences can occur.
Evaluation
In more of an objective standpoint, the benefits the digital environment bring in improved communication, access to knowledge, and opportunities for collaboration outweigh most potential harm that comes. Having students easily connect with not only normal resources at any time anywhere but understand perspectives from all across the globe allows our students and leaders of tomorrow to build a stronger knowledge base. However, the risks cannot be understated. School life can be hard at the best of times and being easily exposed to harmful content, cyberbullying and privacy risk is something that can risk our future.
Analysis
Schools need to play a bigger and more productive role in addressing this risk. The government have already stepped in with the age verification reforms, but schools need to also educate these students before they ca properly accesses the digital world. Many schools now include programs that teach students how to behave responsibly online, how to protect their personal information, and how to respond to cyberbullying. However, more is needed to be done especially with how prominent generative AI can be in the learning environment. Therefore, more focus needs to be on teaching students how to use technology safely and ethically.
Conclusion
Technology is unavoidable, and it provides immense value and opportunity however, it also comes with significant risk. Yes, technology is a net positive on society there are risk and schools must do more to help manage these problems. Schools as nurture centres for our leaders of tomorrow have the responsibility to help students develop the skills and awareness needed to navigate digital environments safely.
Action Plan
In future, I would love to have technology be a prominent part of my classroom. Having students from an early age exposed to technology will be a prominent part of my classroom. Teaching them how to behave online, have digital literacy and a knowledge bank of responsible use is key to their success and the success of broader society. By promoting awareness and responsibility, teachers can help students benefit from technology while reducing its risks.
